We’re All Nerdy

Over time I’ve learned that we’re all a bit nerdy about something. At least I hope so. Most of us have things where we hardly notice the glazed eyes of the innocent bystander when we start talking about the topic that makes us giddy and holds our interest like most other things can’t.

It could be bicycling, woodworking, sewing, robotics, gardening, bird watching or even accounting! There are practically an infinite number of options.

When we start talking about those things we get the courteous smile from our spouse acknowledging that they hear us and are excited that we’re excited, but have very little interest in the topic we’re monologuing on.

When we get around others who “get it,” it’s paradise. We can compare ideas, learn from them and make plans for future projects inspired by others with more experience in the topic.

Unfortunately, I know there are some who don’t know the feelings I’ve talked about above. I used to be in that camp, where I felt like there weren’t too many things I was really interested in. It’s tough to admit, but I was sort of “meh” as a person.

So the question I pose is: why not get nerdy about something? Anything. Find a topic that is vaguely interesting, go to the library and dive in. Do some research, take a few swings at getting started on the new topic and understand it may take a few tries before we find the thing that makes us realize everyone else is crazy for not loving it as much as we do.
